Radostina Neykova

Radostina Neykova graduated from the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts “Kr. Sarafov” (BG). She is an Associate Professor in the same institution, teaching “Dramaturgy of Animated Cinema” and “Animation Techniques”. She directed several award-winning short films and is an illustrator of children’s books. In her most recent films, she uses an original and complex animation technique using handmade embroidery — that gives life to this year’s MONSTRINHA.

Father’s Day Special: Optical Toys and Animated Shadows
(Atmosfera m)

MONSTRA proposes a creative celebration of Father’s Day in this workshop for parents and children, from 6 years old and up. There will be two main activities: the construction of a double optical toy — the zoephenakistiscope, a combination of the zoetrope and the phenakistoscope — and the creation of a short film using “chinese shadows”, in which families work with cut-outs, or the participants’ own bodies, projected on a wall and captured by mobile phone.

Animation is one of the most transdisciplinary arts there are. Writing, thinking, geography and even mathematics and physics are connected to its making. Thus, it is easy to understand how important its use is as a pedagogical medium, both in the classroom and in playful spaces. Part of the programme of MONSTRINHA, the ENCONTRÃO is a space for dialogue between educators who already use or want to start using the art of animation where they work.

Stories of Old Photos
(Cinema São Jorge – sala 2)

During the workshop, the participants shall create a short animation film with photo cut-out techniques, creating a very short story with characters and backgrounds made from parts of old photos. The process of creating this animation miniature will familiarize the children with different stages of producing an animation film, frame by frame, while also getting them acquainted with past real places and real people fixed on the old photos.

Caixa de Brinquedos Óticos Regina Pessoa & Manual do Pequeno Animador

This object consists of several optical toys that use the basic principles of moving images: Thamatropes, Folioscopes, Phenakistiscopes, Zootropes and Flip Books, accompanied by a small practical guide to initiate the Animation Cinema. The creation of this new box of optical toys has as a main focus the work done by Regina Pessoa, celebrating the relationship established between Curtas Metragens CRL and the filmmaker, which includes the representation, promotion and dissemination of her films by the Curta Metragens Agency. Wilson Lazaretti, director, animator and animation teacher for over 4 decades and passionate pedagogue, will present his Manual do Pequeno Animador, a toolbook for children wanting to learn animation, as well as their parents and teachers

Animated Documentary: experimentations as animator and subject

(21 MARCH – Cinema São Jorge – sala 2 ; 22 & 23 MARCH – Universidade Lusófona)

From a contextualization of the animated documentary format, the activity aims for a collective creation of a short film in which the participants act both as protagonists – sharing personal stories and transforming them into a script – and as animators – animating them with two animation techniques (stop-motion with clay and timelapse with watercolor).

KOYAA: From the garage project to professional stop-motion series
(Cinemateca Júnior)

It all started in 2001, when a talented crew — led by Kolja Saksida —, working in a garage on the outskirts of Ljubljana, began animating short clips starring Koyaa. The series grew slowly, but surely: it travelled the world, screened at many film festivals and won multiple awards. But most importantly, it won the hearts of children and the young at heart and earned a place in the history of domestic animated film production.

A masterclass where we will be able to benefit from his mastery as an animator, director and teacher.

The Creative Process of My Sunny Maad

Michaela Pavlátová is an animation director from the Czech Republic. Her films have received numerous awards at international film festivals, including an Oscar nomination for “Reci, reci, reci” (“Words, words, words”). She will be leading a masterclass on the creative process of her feature film “My Sunny Maad”, running in the Feature Film Competition of MONSTRA, from the first idea to the moment of its final edition for screening.

The Meaning of Space in Raimund Krumme’s Work

Raimund Krumme is an independent animation filmmaker and director of commercials for the American and Japanese market. His animated shorts have won many international awards and, his drawings, were exhibited in galleries and institutions worldwide. He taught at universities in Brazil, United States, Germany and, during the school year of 2020/21, was a guest professor at the Taipei National University of the Arts.

This round table will also include Animation School, from South Africa, which is in the process of establishing itself in Portugal.

During MONSTRA, we will walk through the streets of the city, making small animation pieces using the different possible techniques of stop motion, pixilation (animation of people), objects, time lapse, light animation (long exposure photos in low light contexts, using torches) and all the elements and ideas that may arise from the imagination of the participants.

In this conversation, analogous to a journey, Elsa Cerqueira — winner of the Global Teacher Prize Portugal 2021 with the project “Philosophy with Cinema” — invites the filmic narrative to take the lead, in a process of unveiling the philosophical potentialities of animation cinema from the ethical-aesthetic experiences of 22 children from class 2A (Escola Básica n.º 2 de Amarante) with the Portuguese short film “The Shoemaker” (2011), by Vasco Sá and David Doutel.

Tiago Galrito is a musician and student in Artistic and Cultural Mediation, besides being a regular collaborator of MONSTRA.
