Through Koji Yamamura’s thinking in the process of creating “Dozens of Norths”, the multi awarded, Oscar nominated director presents the creative process of some of his other works, from the beginning of an idea to the conclusion of the film.

Hayao Miyazaki’s Liberated Worlds
Inherent to the animated films of Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of the legendary Studio Ghibli, there is an intention of confronting the audience with issues and deep truths. By depicting those issues in universes of fantasy, his films defy our sense of reality to transport us to free and liberated worlds, where one can overcome obstacles, find paths of renewal and new and better possibilities for a human tolerable existence. Following a brief chronological approach of Miyazaki’s life, work and filmography, this masterclass will enhance key points about Miyazaki’s journey by specialist Cátia Peres.

While we all know creativity in different activities, creativity has a mysterious nature and it often seems to come and go by itself. De Wit also wishes to share some ways to enhance our access to creativity and will happily answer any of the public’s questions.

In this workshop, the public and Japanese animation director and lecturer Maya Yonesho will try to make an experimental animation together. “Daumenreise” is an art project to make a film synchronizing drawing animation and the city — here, discovering, drawing about and shooting the film in the city of Lisbon. All you need is your idea about the Portuguese capital: what you like, what you do not like, what is interesting for you, and what you want to tell about Lisbon to other people.

Recycling old clothes for animation
Martin Smatana is the author of the short animated film “The Kite”, included in the Film Collection of MoMA, in New York, and winner of over 60 international awards. The film was entirely created from old fabrics, second-hand clothes and discarded textiles, collected from around every shop in Prague and friends’ donations. In this masterclass, Martin will present the behind-the-scenes process of creating a textile stop motion film and will also show a couple of illustrated good news stories which he also created with these materials.

IBERIAN PRODUCERS MEETING

Iberian Producers Meeting
With the aim of extending the already existing cooperation between Spanish and Portuguese production companies, the meeting will present films already made and ongoing projects resulting from Iberian co-productions, as well as create lines for the future development of other collaborations. As a result of this initiative, it is proposed to create a memorandum to be delivered to the film and audiovisual institutes of both countries. Among the guests will be Nuno Beato and Diogo Carvalho (Sardinha em Lata – “Os Demónios do Meu Avô”), Humberto Santana (Animanostra), José María Fernández de La Vega (Growth Producciones), Xosé Zapata (Producer and director of “Galicia”, winner of the Goya Award with “The Monkey”), and Juan Carlos Concha Riveros (Associate Producer of “JOSEP” and “They Shot The Piano Player”).

The journey from High Art to cat videos
Animation director Joan Gratz will compare her pioneering clay painting technique in the Academy Awarded film “Mona Lisa Descending a Staircase” (1992) with her recent mixed media cat videos. Working directly before the camera, she applies bits of clay, blends colors and etches fine lines to create a seamless flow of images. Joan Gratz’s films range in content through painterly expressions of poetry, improvised abstraction, and animated social documentary.

Augmented reality @ Reniform Production
Reniform Production is a Romanian animation studio founded by Sergiu Negulici in 2016, gathering a small group of artists that have decided the creative work involving animation should be approached differently. From 2019, the studio began developing new ways of using animation and reaching the public with animated stories through augmented reality, integrating cultural or commercial projects in the studio’s in-house mobile app. In this masterclass, Sergiu Negulici and Ioana Nicoară will show some of the projects developed using this technique.

100 years ago, the first Portuguese animated film was made. 100 years later, the first Portuguese film in the running for the Oscars is an animation. The centenary of Portuguese animated cinema is the theme of the MONSTRA Summit 2023, a meeting that brings together directors, producers, historians, journalists and distributors around the past, present and future of Portuguese animation — which is also European and worldwide.
