In 2022, MONSTRA visited 51 countries — with an extended stop in Bulgaria —, some of these for the first time, through almost 500 films. After another fantastic year, which marked the long-awaited full return to the cinemas, the best Animated Film Festival in Lisbon is preparing, next year, for another long and exciting trip, this time to the Asian continent.
The time has come for the sun to rise on perhaps the most anticipated edition ever. The otakus have already guessed it. In exactly three months, from March 15 to 26, the 22nd MONSTRA, through an extensive and complete retrospective, will pay tribute to the country with one of the most popular and original filmographies: Japan!
In 2023, the year that marks the centenary of Portuguese animation, MONSTRA continues and intensifies its commitment as a host and propelling agent of animation in Portugal, exalting its history, celebrating its present and fostering its future. Thus, we are happy to announce that we will be able to count on a national representation never seen before in the festival sessions.
We also expect, as always, another vibrant MONSTRINHA for the kids and the usual exhibition programme that will occupy the Museu da Marioneta, the Cinemateca Portuguesa and the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes, our long-time partners, and, for the first time in 15 years, the Museu do Oriente.
Several surprises, premieres and guests are already confirmed, professionals and fans who come from all over the world to give prestige to the largest and greatest gathering of animation cinephiles in the Portuguese capital!
For now, SAVE THE DATE: MONSTRA in the loose around Lisbon, from March 15 to 26, 2023!
