Usually MONSTRA reserves its Opening Ceremony night to welcome everyone and show the world some of the most recent works coming out of the hands and studios of young or experienced animation artists. This 20th edition of MONSTRA will be no exception.
MONSTRA will feature the World Premieres of 5 short films that reflect the diversity and excellence of contemporary animation: “A Mulher do Médico”, by Portuguese director Bruno Simões (also the author of our 2021 spot) produced by Animanostra; “The Creation”, the latest work by France-based director José Xavier, “a film composed of emotional states and sensory landscapes” inspired by texts from the biblical Genesis; “Rising in a Spiral”, by Débora Mendes and Elmano Diogo, an animated film based on a musical composition made between Portugal and Belgium.
Guitarist Pedro Jóia will set to music live two student films inspired by Zeca Afonso’s music: “Tiles”, by Callier Epps (London Kingston College, UK) and “A Formiga no Carreiro””, by Tiago Silva (ESAD. CR, Portugal).
In this special session, MONSTRA will also welcome Belgium as the Guest Country in the next week and a half with a moving tribute to Belgian animation.
