MONSTRA – Lisbon Animation Festival starts today! On the celebratory year of the festival’s 18th anniversary, we are bringing the best of animation cinema back, revealing a variety of techniques and animated arts. Analogue, plastic and visual arts are just an example, along with a wide spectrum of cultures, technologies and fields of study which will be available for appraise and, undoubtedly, a way of learning a little more about all of these areas.
Mirroring the diversity of the festival’s schedule, the Opening Ceremony marks the official beginning of the festival, with the following worldwide premieres which will be screened at Cinema São Jorge, after the traditional opening speech:
4 States of Matter, Miguel Pires de Matos’ first film, will present us with a four-act abstract animation. Tiago de Albuquerque’s October 28th, in turn, is an adaptation of a tale by Eça de Queirós.
In order to honour International Women’s Day, MONSTRA will screen three Estonian films, all directed by women: The Circle, also a worldwide debut by Terje Henk, will count with live music accompaniment by Maimu Jõgeda; both Pipe Piper, directed by Marili Sokk, Malle Valli, Triin Sarapik-Kivi, Piret Sigus, and Life with Herman H. Rott, by Chintis Lundgren help bring this tribute together.
