Nominated for an Oscar 2018 and in a national debut, The Breadwinner is a film directed by Nora Twomey, coproduced between 3 countries: Ireland, Canada and Luxembourg.

It tells the story of 11-year-old Parvana, who lives with her family in the room of a small apartment in Kabul, the capital city of Afghanistan that has been destroyed by the war.

Being under the power of the Taliban, Parvana listens to her father’s stories as she grows up while also helping him out at the market, where he reads and writes letters to other people to make a living.

One day, her father is sent to jail and Parvana’s life changes forever. In a time and place where women are not allowed to leave the house without being accompanied by a man, her family is left without someone to sustain the family and do the shopping.

Parvana chooses to cut her hair and disguises herself as a boy, becoming the breadwinner for her family. Even though she risks being found out, she also tries to find a way to save her father.

The Breadwinner is definitely a film that you should not miss! Come watch the first session on the Feature Films Competition at MONSTRA in Room Manoel de Oliveira at Cinema São Jorge, Monday 12th March at 10pm.
