After closing the entries for the International Competition, MONSTRA reached unprecedented numbers! There was a total of 3.635 film submissions in the several international competition categories for the upcoming edition of the festival, which celebrates its 20th anniversary.

Approaching our two decades of existence, we have increased these results by 23% in comparison with last year’s edition. In total, we have received films from 116 countries, located in all 5 continents. While Europe is still the continent with more submissions, the United States of America were the most represented country.

The international recognition of MONSTRA reinforces its status as one of the most important festivals of Animation in Portugal and in Europe. Over the years, the growth has been notorious in many ways. We’re proud of opening doors to a greater number of professionals, schools and students that come from diverse countries. In the end, it is the sharing of different perspectives, ways os seeing and artistic insights that make each edition memorable.

With a program that will honour the cinema of 193 member states of the United Nations, the next edition of MONSTRA will happen in Lisbon, from the 18th to the 29th  of March and it will have the biggest guest ever: the World. At a moment when the United Nations celebrate 75 years of existence, we want to underline the elements that make MONSTRA a unique festival: the transversality of its activities, the genuine crossing of cultures and aesthetics and also the practical and transdisciplinary facet of its courses concerning theuniversal language of animation cinema.
