Centenary of Portuguese Animation: History of Portuguese Animation for Children and Youth
Another family Saturday with MONSTRA at the home of Portuguese cinema! In this very special programme, we bring together some of the most iconic animated short films in our history, such as “The Peculiar Crime of Oddball Mr. Jay” by Bruno Caetano and “A Suspeita” by José Miguel Ribeiro.

On the 95th anniversary of Raoul Servais’ birth, we prepare a tribute to one of the greatest masters of Belgian animation. The programme is composed of two sessions of short films that chronologically go through his work and also a session with films from the main Belgian animation school, KASK Gent, where Raoul Servais studied and later founded the Animation Cinema department.

Summer MONSTRA at Cinema City Alvalade: NAFTA 75 years
The National Academy of Theatre and Film “Kr. Sarafov” (NATFA) is the first Higher School of Theatre in Bulgaria. Since its establishment in 1948, it has been one of the most prestigious educational institutions in Europe in the field of stage and film. NATFA’s animation programme was founded in 1980 by Todor Dinov, the doyen of Bulgarian animation cinema, and the films produced there are highly recognised at various national and international festivals, such as “Cucoo” by Velislav Kazakov, and “Canfilm” by Zlatin Radev, films exhibited in this session.

Summer MONSTRA at Cinema City Alvalade: Punto y Raya – Spanish Abstract Films
Curated by Punto y Raya Festival (Ana Santos / Noel Palazzo)
This selection spans across the 15 year-trajectory of the Punto y Raya Festival, featuring abstract, non-representational short films produced between 2007-2021 in Spain. The works explore very diverse techniques: traditional hand-drawn animation, oil painted animation, video composition, cameraless (direct on film), creative coding, audio-reactive, CG, and stop motion. Many of these works were created especially for the Festival.
