MONSTRA 2025 comes to an end on March 30th, with a closing ceremony that promises to celebrate the best that has been made in animated cinema during this edition. Percebes, by Alexandra Ramires and Laura Gonçalves, has won the Vasco Granja – SPA Grand Prize. The film has had a long run of awards and highlights over the last year.
In international feature films, Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass, by the Quay brothers, is the winner of the RTP Feature Film Grand Prix. This is the third feature film by Stephen and Timothy Quay, two masters with a long career in animation and an unmistakable aesthetic.
In the short films, the film chosen for the Grand Prix Curtas – RTP is Beautiful Men, by Nicolas Keppens. The film explores themes such as solidarity and insecurity in adulthood and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film.
Estonian director Priit Pärn and Manuel Matos Barbosa, a member of CINANIMA’s curatorial board and one of the main promoters of animated cinema in Portugal, were honored with a Career Award.

The MONSTRA team also paid a surprise tribute to its artistic director and founder, Fernando Galrito, in an homage for his 25 years of work in promoting portuguese animation around the world.
Year after year, MONSTRA continues to establish itself as one of the benchmark events for animation film lovers, bringing together national and international talent in a festival that values sharing and creativity. We’re back in 2026, from March 12 to 22, with new surprises and a new guest country – it’s the year of Latvia!
