REM-sleep

Synopsis:
‘REM Sleep’ explores the human condition, and is set in the Middle East, where themes of suffering, war and death are daily realities. Based on the author’s personal experiences as a Syrian refugee, the film also references the 2013 Al Tadamon massacre, in which 41 people were executed. The short takes the viewer on an emotional journey through the complexity of human existence and reflects on the meaning of life, inspired by philosophical movements such as absurdism, nihilism and existentialism.

If traditionally the animator is a master illusionist, conjuring motion through static mediums, what happens when they are given a machine of infinite images? ‘Diffusion Pilot’ is the name of the author's ongoing research project, an AI animation toolkit, and a short film that follows the author's contemplative journey through said project. This journey is fueled by the conflicting nature of AI technology - that which both empowers and overpowers the very notion of creativity.
